The State Port Pilot SCHOOLS South ceremony has tears of sorrow, joy By Marybeth Bianchi Feature Editor Some were jubilant. Others were brimming with emotion that welled up as tears. And they all hugged as if they’d never see each other again. Members of the class of 1993 at South Brunswick High School received their diplomas last Wednesday, passing the official threshold into adulthood. "Through the laughter and the tears we have become a close-knit class of friends," valedictorian Melissa Love told her fellow graduates in her farewell address. With two-thirds of the class going on to college or military service and the rest getting jobs and raising families, everyone will be going their separate ways. Love told them there were some things they couldn’t leave without - like makeup, music, telephones, cars, computers, cash and mother’s cooking. "Many of us won’t leave without our Bibles and our faith," she added. Offering the wisdom gained in 12 years of education. Love advised the undergraduates in the audience, "Don’t give up your dreams. Be yourself and take everything in stride. Follow the program or wait until you have the knowledge to change it Hit the books, study hard. Don’t skip school all the time. Don’t do drugs, not even in the 12th grade. It’s not cool. Study hard, because your grades will follow you all your life." As the graduates gathered in the school cafeteria be fore the ceremony began, Jason Lanier passed out typed copies of The Lord’s Prayer. Later, on stage, he celebrated a victory as he replaced the scheduled moment of silence with a prayer, as re quested by a majority of the graduates. Just a few days before, the U. S. Supreme Court ruled that student-led prayer was permissible at graduation ceremonies. A previous ruling barred public schools from having prayers led by a member of the clergy. The senior class president, Corey Brown, presented principal Sue Sellers with a magnolia tree as a gift from the graduates. LaLisa Hewett and Jamila Eagles were recognized for perfect attendance their entire 12 year school careers. Young Authors leaders Sandy Kaufhold and Kelly Kolander coor dinated the celebration at Southport Elementary School. A student representative from each class read a selection from his or her writing portfolio and the participants enjoyed refreshments.
